Why Done By 5 thinks,
"It's the Most Wonderful Time of Year!"
This year it felt like the warm weather stuck around a bit longer, (maybe that is true for us here in California) making December seem to come from nowhere. Now the holidays are here and the year is quickly coming to an end. This is most likely the most chaotic time of the year for you between managing your business with the holiday shopping rush, attending holiday parties, holiday shopping, baking, travel plans, and whatever else you intended to accomplish before the clock strikes midnight and it is 2018. It is so much that it can make anyone’s head spin, BUT they don’t call it the “most wonderful time of year” for without reason.
This time year is filled with love. It is the time when we make it a point show our employees and clients how invaluable they are. We seek out the “hot toy” of the season because the smile your kids face when they get it is priceless. We come together with friends to reminisce about the past, but also to create amazing new memories. We search for that perfect gift, no matter what it is, to simply say, “This made me think of you, I love you.” We manage through all of the craziness because we love what we do and the people we surround ourselves with. There is no other feeling quite like it.
The Done By 5 team wants to share what truly makes the holidays wonderful for us.
What is great for me this time of year is being able to implement any lingering projects or initiatives that have been brewing throughout the year. Many of our clients (LOL and DB5) cram in those last minute expenses and all of the planning that has been happening throughout the year… kind of comes together. I LOVE when I get to complete an initiative for a client. For example, my local client Genova Delicatessen (who makes the best ravioli on the planet I might add...) has been in need of an updated Point of Sale system for quite some time. Since the holidays are here and happening we decided to ‘go for it’ before the huge holiday rush and before the new year began. We all felt the joy once it was installed and happening and making everyone’s life better. I also like this time of year for the crisp air, hot chocolate and lattes, and being able to snuggle up under a warm blanket in my home and spend time with my family.
Holidays in my family have always been low key. They have always been about spending time with our little family and close friends and brightening the room with light and laughter. Traditions have come and gone, but the core sentiment always stays the same - taking time to stop, listen, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company. When I think about holiday memories, we’re always in a circle, whether to unpack stockings (our biggest tradition comes in stocking stuffers - fancy grocery store treats! My mom gets anchovies, I get olives, and my dad always gets chocolate), or a white elephant game, or a meal with friends. A circle lets you see everyone, and it is easy to bring more people in. I think when it really comes down to it, that’s what the holidays are about for me. Seeing people, making room for people, laughing together, and bringing more light into our lives.
The meaning of the holidays change from childhood to adulthood. (Though sometimes I still find it hard to believe I actually am an adult) As an adult it’s family get-togethers and work parties and a lot of money spent! Don’t get me wrong, I love “adulting” it! But what I love most about the holidays is the excitement and joy my children exude. Once December 1st hits the calendar, it turns into an excessive verbal attack of “How many more days until Christmas?”, “I want Santa to bring me this for Christmas (which is pretty much EVERYTHING!)” and “Have you gone Christmas shopping for us yet? (This year I ordered it all online and had it shipped to my dad’s, ha! ). And though the constant questioning and excitement can be overwhelming, when Christmas morning comes and they look as though they may explode with anticipation, it is great! I love watching them strategically deciding what they are going to play with first. My kids, with their innocence and joy, are the most wonderful parts of my Christmas.
Yes, we know it’s crazy and busy for you, it is for us as well. So take some time, sit back with a cup of hot chocolate (maybe indulge with the new trend and try the red wine hot chocolate… Yes! That is a thing) and remind yourself why “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”
